Jóni Helgasyni.“ Smiður var Óskar Ólafsson, og með honum vann Þorkell Guðbjartsson að kirkjusmíðinni. „Sáluhlið það sem nú er, smíðaði Jónas Þórólfsson í Lynghaga, og var það sett upp þann 30. sept. 1993. Fáeinum dögum síðar lést Jónas og var fyrstur manna borinn látinn um þetta hlið.“

Þau dvöldu þar í 10 daga og héldu tvær samkomur í kirkjunni og síðan nokkrar í samkomuhúsi bæjarins og var aðsókn mjög góð. Þórarinn kom aftur seinna um veturinn og hélt þá samkomur í heimahúsum, en hann er fæddur og uppalinn á Snæfellsnesi. Um sumarið var sótt um lóð undir samkomuhús að Skúlagötu 6 og eftir að hún fékkst, var hafist handa í byrjun júlí að grafa fyrir húsinu. (...) Sumarið 1950 var haldið sumarmót Hvítasunnumanna í Stykkishólmi og var húsið þá formlega vígt.“

„Prestssetur var að Kirkjubæ til 1956. Núverandi kirkja var reist 1851, stór og stílhrein timburkirkja. Séra Jón Þorsteinsson lét reisa kirkjuna. Hún er velbyggt hús og var tjörguð að utan annað veifið og hefur ekki þurft mikið viðhald. Bárujárnsþakið var sett á hana árið 1915 og árið 1929 var hún klædd bárujárni að utan. Samtímis voru útveggir málaðir hvítir og þakið rautt. Í henni er predikunarstóll frá tíð Guðbrands Þorlákssonar, biskups á Hólum, með myndum af postulunum Páli og Pétri, Lúkasi guðspjallamanni, Davíð konungi og dönsku konungshjónunum, Friðriki og Soffíu, sem gáfu stólinn. Altaristaflan er eftir Anker Lund frá 1894 og sýnir er Kristur birtist Maríu Magdalenu við gröfina.“

Á Möðrudal eru friðlýstar fornminjar, „fornbæjarrústir, ónafnkenndar, er fundist hafa eigi all skammt norður frá bænum“ (3).

Fyrir hundrað ára afmæli kirkjunnar var hún svo endurbyggð að miklu leyti og lengd um tæpa fjóra metra til vesturs. Kirkjan var tekin í notkun á ný 9. desember 1990. Altaristafla kirkjunnar er frá 1895 og er eftir danska málarann Anker Lund. Á altaristöflunni gefur að líta túlkun listamannsins á göngunni til Emmaus.“

Heimildir eru um kirkjur að Saurbæ á öldum áður og á katólskum tímum voru þær helgaðar heilagri Cecilíu og heilögum Nikulási. Prestar eru nafngreindir á 14. öld. (...) Árið 1907 var Saurbæjarprestakall sameinað Grundarþingum en prestur sat þar samt til 1931. Saurbæjarkirkja er ein örfárra torfkirkna landsins og stærst hinna upprunalegu. Séra Einar Thorlacius (1790-1870) lét reisa hana 1858. Hún rúmar 60 manns í sæti og yfirsmiður var Ólafur Briem. Hún er friðlýst og í umsjá Þjóðminjasafnsins.“
