The current church structure was built between 1967 and 1972, culminating in its consecration on May 14, 1972. This marked a new chapter for the parish, which had seen its parsonage moved to Hveragerði from Arnarbæli in 1941, establishing Hveragerði as its own distinct parish in the same year. This move underscored the growing importance of Hveragerði as a center for the surrounding areas, including its outreach churches at Kotströnd, Hjalli, and Strönd. The architectural vision for Hveragerðiskirkja was brought to life by Jörundur Pálsson, with Jón Guðmundsson overseeing the construction. They crafted a modern concrete edifice capable of seating 200 people, with additional space in a large choir loft and a versatile side hall that functions as a community center. This blend of spiritual and communal space reflects the church's role as a cornerstone of the town. Its unique design, featuring a baptismal font made from a basalt column with an embedded silver bowl, pays homage to Iceland's natural landscape while serving its spiritual purpose.
