History & Background
Ráðhústorg was created after harbour infill in 1927. A town hall was intended for the site but never built. The square instead became one of Akureyri's main civic gathering places and was used for public meetings, events and celebrations, including Republic Day festivities in 1944.
Ráðhústorg is the central public square in Akureyri and a natural starting point for exploring the town on foot. The area did not originally exist as dry land: harbour expansion in 1927 filled in the former bay and created the space that became the square. A new town hall was planned for the site, giving Ráðhústorg its name, but the building was never constructed. Instead, the square developed into an important civic meeting place surrounded by shops, financial institutions, cinemas and transport services. Public meetings, sporting displays and celebrations were held here, including local celebrations marking the establishment of the Republic of Iceland on 17 June 1944. Today Ráðhústorg remains at the heart of central Akureyri and links naturally with the town's historical walking routes. From here visitors can continue south toward Akureyrarkirkja, Listagilið and the Old Town or north toward Oddeyri and the waterfront.
Did You Know?
Despite its name meaning Town Hall Square, the planned town hall was never built here.
