History & Background

The history of Nýidalur is intrinsically linked to the Sprengisandur route, one of Iceland's most ancient and formidable highland passages. For centuries, Sprengisandur served as a challenging shortcut across the interior, used by horsemen and travelers to traverse the island between the north and south. Its name, roughly translating to "Bursting Sands," hints at the arduous journey, where horses would "burst" from exhaustion. The Icelandic Touring Association (Ferðafélag Íslands – FÍ) took on the crucial role of establishing and maintaining mountain huts. Nýidalur, strategically located roughly midway along the Sprengisandur, was identified as an ideal site for such a facility.
