About Nýidalur
Nestled in the heart of Iceland's rugged highlands, Nýidalur serves as a crucial base camp along the Sprengisandur route. The dark wooden cabins with their distinctive red roofs, as seen in the image, provide a welcoming haven for trekkers exploring the vast wilderness around Tungnafellsjökull. It's an ideal stopover for those venturing across the challenging Sprengisandur.
History & Background
The history of Nýidalur is intrinsically linked to the Sprengisandur route, one of Iceland's most ancient and formidable highland passages. For centuries, Sprengisandur served as a challenging shortcut across the interior, used by horsemen and travelers to traverse the island between the north and south. Its name, roughly translating to "Bursting Sands," hints at the arduous journey, where horses would "burst" from exhaustion. As modern exploration and tourism began to open up the Icelandic highlands in the 20th century, the need for safe havens along these remote routes became apparent. The Icelandic Touring Association (Ferðafélag Íslands – FÍ) took on the crucial role of establishing and maintaining mountain huts. Nýidalur, strategically located roughly midway along the Sprengisandur, was identified as an ideal site for such a facility. Over decades, Nýidalur has evolved from a basic shelter into a well-equipped highland station, continuously serving generations of adventurers. It represents a cornerstone of FÍ's mission to facilitate responsible outdoor recreation, providing not only shelter but also a hub for information and safety in one of Europe's last true wildernesses. Its presence underscores the enduring spirit of exploration and the importance of preserving access to Iceland's unique interior.
