This location has been a place of worship for a long time, with previous Catholic churches here dedicated to the Virgin Mary, indicating a deep spiritual tradition predating the Reformation in Iceland. The church's most notable architectural feature, its tall tower, was a later addition, constructed in 1961. This tower significantly altered the church's silhouette, making it a more prominent landmark by the lake. Historically, the site was served from Þingvellir, a testament to its early importance in the region. Notable figures like Gissur Bjarnason (1660-1727) served here from Þingvellir for a period. Today, Úlfljótsvatnskirkja continues its spiritual role as an annex from Mosfell in Grímsnes, maintaining a living connection to Iceland's rich Christian heritage.
