Hvalasafnið á Húsavík opened in 1997 in a beautiful converted 1930s slaughterhouse on the harbourfront. The museum traces the natural history, biology and conservation of whales with exceptional clarity and depth. Thirteen complete whale skeletons hang from the ceiling of the main hall — including the awe-inspiring 24-metre blue whale skeleton, one of only a few on public display in the world. Whale-human relations are explored honestly: the history of Icelandic whaling and current conservation debates are presented without flinching. Combine with a whale-watching boat trip from the same harbour for the full experience.
