Background
History & Background
Selatangar was used as a seasonal fishing station for centuries and preserves unusually visible evidence of the hard coastal life that supported communities on Reykjanes. Fishermen built shelters and working spaces from local lava rock and used nearby caves where useful. The site declined as fishing methods and harbour infrastructure changed, and regular fishing activity ended after 1880. The surviving ruins are protected archaeological remains.
Selatangar was a substantial seasonal fishing station on the south coast of Reykjanes. Boats operated from here for the Krýsuvík estate and other owners, including the bishopric of Skálholt. Fishing activity ended after 1880, but extensive protected ruins remain, including hut foundations and lava caves adapted for practical use by fishermen. Local folklore from the late 19th century also tells of a ghost known as Tanga-Tómas. Access is by a rough track from Ísólfsskálavegur, and visitors should avoid disturbing protected archaeological remains.
