Gásir was the main medieval trading place in northern Iceland and is mentioned in written sources from at least the 12th century. Seasonal trade brought together Icelanders and overseas merchants for centuries. Archaeological research has documented extensive remains from the market, and activity may have continued until trade shifted toward Akureyri around the 16th century.

Gásir, on the shore of Eyjafjörður north of Akureyri, is one of Iceland's most significant archaeological sites from the Middle Ages. Rather than a permanent town, it functioned as a seasonal trading place where merchants, craftspeople, farmers and travellers gathered to exchange goods and conduct business. The site is repeatedly mentioned in medieval Icelandic written sources, including sagas from the 13th and 14th centuries. Archaeological investigations have revealed extensive remains of booths, working areas and other structures associated with the marketplace. Evidence indicates that Gásir remained an important trading location for centuries, possibly until commerce increasingly shifted toward Akureyri in the 16th century. Today the site is a quiet coastal landscape, but its archaeological remains make it unusually valuable for understanding Iceland's connections with wider North Atlantic trade before modern towns developed. Gásir also lies in an area with important birdlife and natural value, so visitors should respect both the protected ruins and the surrounding environment.
