About Stjórnarráðið
Stjórnarráðið, the Government House, is the seat of the Icelandic government located in the centre of Reykjavík, overlooking Austurvöllur square. The low, white building, dating from 1761, is the oldest public building still in use in Iceland and was originally built as a prison. Its modest scale reflects Iceland's understated democratic tradition and it stands beside the Alþingishús (Parliament House) in the heart of the capital.

History & Background
Stjórnarráðið was built between 1761 and 1771 as a prison, making it one of the earliest stone structures in Iceland. During this period, Iceland was under Danish control, and the building served a practical role in the administration of justice. In the 19th century, as Iceland began to gain more autonomy, the building was repurposed for administrative use. It became the center of Iceland’s government and played an important role in the country’s political development. Today, it remains a key government building and houses the Prime Minister’s Office, continuing its role at the core of Icelandic governance.
