The trail officially starts at Landmannalaugar (in the highlands) and ends at Þórsmörk, or vice versa. Most hikers go from Landmannalaugar to Þórsmörk. Route highlights: - Day 1: Landmannalaugar to Hrafntinnusker (rhyolite mountains, hot springs) - Day 2: Hrafntinnusker to Álftavatn (glaciers, volcanic desert) - Day 3: Álftavatn to Emstrur (black sand plains) - Day 4: Emstrur to Þórsmörk (green valleys, rivers) Booking mountain huts or camping spots in advance is essential (June-September).
