The modern harbour at Grindavík developed in Hópið, a naturally sheltered lagoon separated from the sea by a gravel and stone barrier. In 1939 work began on a navigable channel through the barrier, allowing fishing operations to move into the harbour and creating the foundation for the port seen today. The harbour was progressively deepened and expanded with quays and protective structures as vessels became larger. Later projects improved the entrance channel and breakwaters. Grindavík remains a place of active recovery and changing access following recent volcanic and seismic events, so visitors should check current local restrictions before travelling into harbour or town areas.
