History & Background

The history of Úthlíðarkirkja stretches back centuries, long before the striking modern structure seen today. In the Catholic tradition, the churches on this site were dedicated to Mary, the Mother of God. These early churches served as out-churches, initially from the rectory in Miðdal in Laugardal, until legislation in 1880 shifted their affiliation to Torfastöðum. The church continued to be served from Torfastöðum and Skálholt until 1963. A significant event in its recent history occurred in 1936 when the existing church was destroyed by a storm. For many years thereafter, religious services were held in the living room of a home in Úthlíð, highlighting the community's enduring faith despite the lack of a dedicated building. This interim period lasted until a new church could be realized. The current Úthlíðarkirkja was constructed between 2005 and 2006, a project driven by the profound personal dedication of local farmer Björn Sigurðsson. He built the church in loving memory of his wife, Ágústa Ólafsdóttir, who passed away prematurely in the autumn of 2004. This modern edifice, capable of seating 120 people, not only continues a long tradition of worship on this site but also stands as a unique monument to personal devotion and community spirit.

Úthlíðarkirkja was completed in 2006 as a modern church serving the local area. The building has a distinctive blue-and-white exterior and a tall glazed tower. Earlier church use in the locality gives the site a longer religious history, but the present building is contemporary. Visitors should respect services and check current access before assuming the interior is open.
