Þórshöfn became an important local landing and trading point during the 19th century. Merchants in Keflavík sent vessels there with salt, timber and other heavy goods, while fish from farmers in Miðnes and Hafnir was loaded for trade. Use of the harbour declined in the early 20th century as Sandgerði developed as the main trading harbour in the area. Today the site is best appreciated as a quiet coastal heritage stop rather than a working visitor facility.
