Hallormsstaðaskógur is Iceland's largest national forest and one of East Iceland's main woodland destinations. The forest covers roughly 740 hectares along Lake Lagarfljót and includes around 40 km of walking routes, recreation areas and campsites. Visitors can explore the Hallormsstaður arboretum, where more than 80 tree species are represented, on an approximately 1.5 km walk from a marked parking area. Near Atlavík, the Jökullækur route is a short woodland walk of about 200 metres each way past a collection of species established from 1963, including fir, spruce, hemlock, Douglas fir and giant sequoia. Guttormslundur is best treated as another small grove within the wider Hallormsstaðaskógur experience rather than as a separate top-level attraction.
