Reykjavik Art Museum was founded in 1973 and has since grown into the largest visual art institution in Iceland. Over time the museum expanded to include three locations across the city, each highlighting different aspects of Icelandic art and culture.
Reykjavik Art Museum is the largest art museum in Iceland and an important cultural institution in the capital city. The museum consists of three locations, each with its own unique focus and architectural style. Hafnarhús, located by the old harbour in downtown Reykjavik, is known for contemporary art exhibitions and modern installations. Kjarvalsstaðir, located near Klambratún park, showcases works by the famous Icelandic painter Jóhannes S. Kjarval as well as other exhibitions. Ásmundarsafn is dedicated to the sculptor Ásmundur Sveinsson and features both indoor and outdoor sculptures.
