Hólar was the episcopal seat of northern Iceland for centuries. The present cathedral was built in 1763, replacing earlier churches on a site with religious history reaching back to the 11th century. Its red sandstone construction makes it architecturally distinctive, and it remains central to the historic identity of Hólar.

Hólar Cathedral is the defining landmark of Hólar in Hjaltadalur, one of Iceland's great historic church and learning centres. The present building was completed in 1763 and constructed from distinctive red sandstone quarried locally from Hólabyrða. It is recognised as the oldest stone church in Iceland. The cathedral stands within a much longer religious tradition. A church has been present at Hólar since the 11th century, and the site served for centuries as the bishop's seat for northern Iceland. Religious authority, education, manuscript culture and later printing all helped make Hólar one of the country's most influential institutions. A visit to the cathedral is best combined with the surrounding historic landscape. Archaeological work has revealed extensive evidence of life at Hólar, while the modern university continues the site's educational role. Together, the cathedral and its setting provide one of the clearest links between medieval Iceland, early modern church history and the living culture of Skagafjörður.
