Staðarhóll has been a significant settlement and church site since ancient times, located at the mouth of Staðarhólsdalur in Saurbær. The earliest documented evidence of a church here dates back to around the turn of the 13th century, highlighting centuries of continuous religious practice in this remote part of West Iceland. The current church structure was erected in 1899 on a new site near the church mound and was consecrated on December 3rd of the same year, replacing an older church and solidifying its role as a spiritual center for the community. The church faced a severe challenge on February 17, 1981, when a powerful storm tragically lifted it from its foundation, causing extensive damage. This event could have spelled the end for Staðarhólskirkja, but the community rallied with remarkable determination. Under the guidance of master builder Gunnar Jónsson, the church was meticulously rebuilt to its original design, a true testament to the local spirit and dedication. It was proudly reopened for worship with a festive service on September 5, 1982, less than two years after its destruction. Staðarhólskirkja not only stands as a symbol of resilience but also houses valuable historical artifacts. Among its notable treasures are an altar painting dating back to 1750 and a distinctive copper ring adorned with a lion's head, offering glimpses into the artistic and cultural heritage of the region. The parish of Hvolskirkja was dissolved in 1899, merging its congregation with Staðarhólssókn, further solidifying Staðarhólskirkja's importance as a central place of worship and community gathering.
