Akrakirkja holds a rich history, with a church believed to have stood on the Akrar site since the Christianization of Iceland, though the first documented records date back to around 1200. During the Catholic era, these churches were dedicated to Mary, the Mother of God, and a priest resided there until the Reformation. The site itself was an ancient chieftain's seat, highlighting its historical importance beyond just religious worship. The current timber church, clad in corrugated iron and built on a stone foundation, was constructed in 1900. Prior to this, the church was rebuilt and expanded in 1899. Significant renovations were undertaken between 1986 and 1987, ensuring the structure's integrity and preserving its heritage. Recognizing its cultural value, Akrakirkja was officially protected as a heritage site in 1990. Its enduring presence on the landscape, with its distinctive red roof and white walls, serves as a tangible link to centuries of Icelandic faith and community life in the Borgarfjörður region.
