Check live dates and genuine vehicle availability on DiscoverCars. SUVs and AWD vehicles shown here are NOT verified modified Super Jeeps. For specialist Highland rentals, obtain written confirmation from the operator that your exact road and vehicle are permitted.

Important: AWD/4x4 does not guarantee permission to drive F-roads. Confirm the exact route, vehicle and rental contract with the supplier; closed roads and river crossings may be prohibited even with a 4x4.

Category pictures before searching are illustrative images sourced from DiscoverCars, not live availability. Real cards and prices come from your own dated search. GoIceTravel may earn a commission at no extra cost.

Specialist self-drive modified Jeeps are not guaranteed in ordinary car rental results. Read the F-road rules before booking.

Guided Super Jeep tours in the Highlands

Browse real TourDesk products that specifically describe a Super Jeep. Availability, dates, pickup and the final price are confirmed by each operator at checkout.

Do you really need a Super Jeep?

The most useful question is not “What is the biggest jeep I can rent?” but “Which roads, in which season, do I intend to drive?” Most Reykjavík, Golden Circle, South Coast and summertime Ring Road itineraries do not need a specialist modified Super Jeep. A regular car—or an ordinary 4x4 when conditions warrant—usually makes more sense.

If your route leads into the Highlands, compare three separate requirements: the vehicle’s technical ability, whether the road is legally open, and whether the rental contract explicitly permits that precise road and activity. All three must agree. Even a very capable vehicle cannot make a closed road legal or a swollen river safe.

For Þórsmörk, remote Fjallabak tracks or uncertain river crossings, a guided expedition with an experienced local driver is often a more realistic and safer plan than a self-drive rental.

Colourful Kerlingarfjöll mountains in Iceland's Highlands

Highland terrain is the reason to choose a vehicle carefully—not a guarantee any particular road is accessible.

What is a Super Jeep in Iceland?

Super Jeep is an informal Icelandic description, not a single standardized rental class. It usually describes a purpose-modified 4x4 with larger tyres, increased ground clearance and equipment selected for harsh terrain. Two vehicles called “Super Jeeps” can have very different capabilities.

  • Standard 2WD: suitable for many paved and well-maintained routes in appropriate weather; not for F-road routes requiring 4x4.
  • Ordinary AWD SUV: may improve traction but does not automatically provide low-range gearing, sufficient clearance or rental permission for all F-roads.
  • Proper high-clearance 4x4: can be suitable for selected open Highland roads when the rental company authorizes the route.
  • Modified Super Jeep: may offer raised suspension, oversized tyres, differential locks, low-range gearing, recovery gear or a snorkel—but the exact equipment varies.

Large tyres, a snorkel or a Land Cruiser badge never substitute for driver experience or written permission. Ground clearance, traction, payload, tyre condition, road condition, water depth and rental insurance exclusions all matter.

Popular 4x4 platforms—and what the names do not tell you

Icelandic Highland fleets sometimes use Toyota Land Cruiser, Toyota Hilux, Land Rover Defender, Jeep Wrangler, Mitsubishi Pajero or other specialist truck platforms. A vehicle model alone is not proof of modification, fording capability or access rights.

  • Ask for the exact booked vehicle or guaranteed equivalent, not only a “similar model” example.
  • Confirm tyre size, ground clearance, low-range gearing and spare tyre provision where relevant.
  • Ask whether F-roads and the particular route are permitted in the written rental contract.
  • Confirm driver requirements, assistance, deposit and recovery liability before paying.
  • Treat driver training and judgment as essential, regardless of equipment.

Do not treat an automatic DiscoverCars “SUV” or “4x4” filter result as a confirmed Super Jeep. Supplier rules and exact models must be checked separately.

Compare regular 4x4 rental availability

Our existing DiscoverCars search shows real offers when available. A listed SUV or 4x4 is not automatically a modified Super Jeep or approved for Highland roads.

Self-drive Super Jeep vs guided Highlands tour

Choose a self-drive specialist rental only if the supplier explicitly allows your exact route, you have relevant remote-road experience and you can adjust or cancel plans for weather or road closures. It offers flexibility but places vehicle, navigation and recovery decisions on the driver.

A guided Super Jeep tour puts route choice, interpretation and vehicle operation in the hands of an experienced operator. For remote river crossings, winter expeditions or first-time Highlands visitors, this can be a much better fit.

A guided tour still depends on weather and road restrictions. “Super Jeep tour” does not promise access to closed, unsafe or environmentally protected areas.

F-road regions explained: Fjallabak, Kjölur, Askja and Sprengisandur

Iceland's Highlands are not one destination and not one type of drive. Different corridors have different surfaces, isolation, river crossings and opening patterns. Choose the region before choosing a rental. The vehicle must be suitable for the actual route, the road must be legally open, and your hire contract must permit it.

South Highlands — Landmannalaugar, Fjallabak and Þórsmörk

For colourful mountains and marked hikes, start with Landmannalaugar, the colourful peaks around Brennisteinsalda and Bláhnjúkur. Nearby Sigöldugljúfur can provide an additional scenic stop on a suitable day. Do not treat an attractive landscape photo as proof that the approach is accessible by rental car.

The roads associated with the F208/F225 approaches are not identical; individual branches, seasonal washouts, and unbridged crossings matter. Þórsmörk is a separate and much more challenging decision because typical approaches on F249 include major river crossings. Use a qualified local guided vehicle or designated Highland bus rather than assuming a self-drive 4x4 is appropriate.

Central Highlands — Kjölur, Kerlingarfjöll and Hveravellir

The Kjölur corridor is a different travel experience: volcanic landscapes, broad gravel sections, Kerlingarfjöll, geothermal Hveradalir and Hveravellir. Some summer visits can be feasible with an appropriate permitted 4x4, but check the route's current official designation, conditions, driving time and supplier restrictions.

Northeast Highlands — Askja and Herðubreið

A journey to Askja or Herðubreiðarlindir can involve long remote approaches and potentially unbridged water. Fuel, communications and backup plans matter more than comfort features. The road network near F88/F905 changes with conditions; check the exact current route rather than treating all approaches as interchangeable.

Across the interior — Sprengisandur and specialist tracks

Remote interior crossings around Sprengisandur and Nýidalur are not casual day trips. Distances between help, exposure, weather changes and route access require conservative planning. A guided expedition can be the most realistic option when river knowledge or local conditions are uncertain.

Before departure consult our F-road guide and our Highlands guide, then confirm official restrictions at umferdin.is and SafeTravel. Never drive off marked roads or beyond a closure.

How to plan a real Highlands itinerary

A single dedicated summer day: choose ONE Highlands destination

Choose a verified, open route to Landmannalaugar or a suitable part of Kerlingarfjöll. Add a nearby short walk, a scenic stop and time to turn around if weather worsens. The day is about enjoying the destination, not fitting every pin on a map. Check road access that morning, and avoid scheduling a hard arrival or flight deadline after remote driving.

A flexible two- or three-day visit: Kjölur and Hveravellir

With suitable overnight arrangements and an authorized vehicle, a longer Kjölur plan may combine Hvítárvatn, Hveradalir, and Hveravellir. Facilities and opening dates are seasonal: check campsite or lodging reservations before travel, and do not drive onto unmarked tracks to find a place to stay.

For first-time remote travel: book a guided expedition

Consider a guided Super Jeep product when you want Þórsmörk, Askja or more remote Fjallabak terrain. Professional guides still cancel or reroute trips for safety; the advantage is specialist vehicles, route knowledge and realistic contingency planning. The bookable TourDesk products above show operator-managed departure options where available.

How to use the GoIceTravel Trip Planner

Open Trip Planner to save the individual attractions you want to see, then open each attraction's full page for descriptions, photographs and visit ideas. Planner pins are inspiration only, not driving directions or legal road-access approval. Re-check road status and vehicle permission separately.

Highland destinations: vehicle and access considerations

These are travel inspiration and planning notes, not live passability assessments. Check umferdin.is and SafeTravel before every departure; the exact approach, season and your rental contract matter.

Landmannalaugar

highlands

What you can do

Explore multicoloured rhyolite hills, marked hiking trails and the area's famous geothermal landscapes.

Getting there
Check the exact approach and current F208/F225 conditions. River crossings depend on route and parking choice; the road being open does not mean your rental is permitted or a crossing is safe.

Safety and booking

Never cross closed roads or drive off marked roads. If you cannot verify safe access and written rental permission, choose a guided alternative.

Þórsmörk

highlands

What you can do

A dramatic valley framed by glaciers, known for hiking and scenery.

Getting there
F249 contains serious river crossings, including the Krossá area. Prefer an experienced guided Super Jeep driver or designated bus; do not assume a self-drive rental is allowed.

Safety and booking

Never cross closed roads or drive off marked roads. If you cannot verify safe access and written rental permission, choose a guided alternative.

Askja

north iceland

What you can do

Explore the remote volcanic caldera landscape in the northeast Highlands.

Getting there

Kerlingarfjöll

highlands

What you can do

Walk among steaming valleys, colourful mountains and marked paths.

Getting there
Kjölur access and final road surfaces depend on conditions; a regular suitable rental 4x4 may suffice in some summer conditions but a Super Jeep is not universally required.

Lakagígar

south iceland

What you can do

Visit the Laki crater landscape and volcanic fissure scenery.

F-roads, closures and Iceland's off-road driving ban

The letter F marks a mountain road; it does not mean every 4x4 may drive it. Some open F-roads are relatively manageable in appropriate conditions, while others include steep, eroded tracks, unbridged rivers or long isolated sections.

  • Check the official road map for live status before departure, again on the travel day, and as conditions change.
  • A legally closed road remains closed to private rentals, even with a modified Super Jeep.
  • Roads marked impassable are not an invitation to attempt a crossing; contact officials or a professional guide.
  • Driving off designated roads or tracks is prohibited and damages vulnerable vegetation and soil.
  • A rented vehicle requires the supplier's permission for the route; legal road access and rental permission are separate questions.

Insurance, contracts and real trip costs

Do not compare Super Jeeps using daily price alone. Look at deposit/security hold, excess, what the hire agreement calls off-road or F-road use, tyre and underbody coverage, river/water damage, recovery fees, roadside assistance, driver age and licence terms, and the impact of travel on unlisted tracks.

Written supplier terms override travel articles, advertising blurbs and third-party recommendations. If the offer says “4x4” but does not identify permitted F-roads, request clarification before booking. Never assume a coverage package makes a forbidden road or river crossing permissible.

A modified vehicle may be expensive to hire and operate. Prices and inventory vary by dates and supplier; we do not publish invented daily rates or claim that all 4x4 search results are specialist vehicles.

Example of a supplier listing a modified 35-inch Land Cruiser — Lotus (verify live terms)

Remote Askja volcanic landscape in Iceland

Long remote routes can complicate recovery and vehicle assistance.

Winter Highlands driving is a different category

Most Highland F-roads are closed or inaccessible for conventional private driving over winter. A specialist expedition operated by professionals may have other arrangements, but never drive past a closure or assume that snow tyres make a route legal.

For winter visitors, prioritize guided expeditions when offered and suitable. Carry layered warm clothing, emergency essentials and a flexible itinerary. Check SafeTravel, the Icelandic Met Office and official road alerts.

Checklist before you reserve or drive

  • Choose actual destinations and route variants first, including possible rivers.
  • Check official road openings and the current forecast—not last year's opening dates.
  • Obtain written confirmation of the exact vehicle and every permitted F-road.
  • Read water, underbody, recovery, tyre, damage-excess and deposit exclusions.
  • Confirm fuel range, spare wheel, pickup/return times, emergency contact and mobile coverage limitations.
  • Plan a no-river fallback or reputable guided tour for a difficult destination.
  • Use designated campsites and parking; stay strictly on marked roads.
  • Re-check forecasts and closure updates on the morning of departure.
