Eldgjá is a major volcanic rift in the Highlands, reaching hundreds of metres across and up to around 200 metres deep in places. Its landscape records powerful volcanic activity shortly after Iceland was settled. Access is seasonal on Highland roads, and visitors should check current road, weather and trail conditions before travelling.
