The Eastfjords are where the Ring Road slows down and the crowds thin out. Roads wind around one deep fjord after another, past tiny harbours, mountains that plunge straight into the sea and the occasional herd of reindeer — the only place in Iceland you'll find them wild.

Inland lies Egilsstaðir, the region's hub, beside the long lake Lagarfljót (said to hold its own monster) and Hallormsstaður, the country's largest forest. Over the mountains, the arts town of Seyðisfjörður draws travellers with its blue church, rainbow-painted street and the weekly ferry from mainland Europe.

This is the region for travellers who value emptiness and atmosphere over checklist sights — though Hengifoss, the puffin colony at Borgarfjörður Eystri and the geothermal Vök Baths on their lake more than reward the long drive east.
