Overview
Reykjanes is the volcanic peninsula between Reykjavík and Keflavík International Airport, where fresh lava, geothermal fields, lighthouses and Atlantic cliffs sit within a relatively compact area. Many visitors cross it only on the airport road, but the peninsula is one of the easiest places in Iceland to see active geology without committing to a long road trip.
The landscape is stark rather than lush: young lava fields, steaming ground, low mountains and exposed coastline. Gunnuhver and the Krýsuvík/Seltún area show geothermal activity at the surface, while Reykjanesviti, sea cliffs and coastal roads add a strong Atlantic character. Keflavík and the surrounding towns bring fishing history, museums and practical services into the same route.
Recent volcanic activity has also made safety planning especially important. Access to roads, hiking areas and specific eruption sites can change, and visitors should treat closures as part of the itinerary rather than an inconvenience. With current conditions checked, Reykjanes works extremely well as a first or last Iceland day, a standalone road loop, or a flexible bad-weather alternative close to the capital.

The Peninsula's Character
Reykjanes sits on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates pull apart at roughly two centimetres a year — and the landscape shows it. Geothermal fields bubble and steam across the peninsula: Gunnuhver near Reykjanesviti is Iceland's largest mud pool, and the colourful Seltún area in the Krýsuvík geothermal zone is one of the most photogenic. Fresh lava fields near Fagradalsfjall and Grindavík mark eruption sites from 2021 onwards.
Access to specific areas can change without warning during periods of volcanic unrest. Always check safetravel.is, road.is and visitreykjanes.is before heading out, obey all exclusion zones, and never approach an active eruption site without an authorised guide.
Sea, Cliffs and Sky
The Reykjanes coastline is raw and dramatic. Brimketill, a natural lava pool carved by waves near Grindavík, is one of the peninsula's most striking sights. Lighthouses mark the headlands — Reykjanesviti, Iceland's oldest, stands close to where the Mid-Atlantic Ridge meets the ocean, and Garðskagi on the north tip offers some of the best Northern Lights viewing near any populated area.
Geothermal
Reykjanes combines everyday public-pool culture with geothermal bathing on a larger scale. Town pools are the affordable local option, while premium geothermal bathing is a major visitor draw on the peninsula.
Eat & Experience
Keflavík and the larger Reykjanes towns have the peninsula’s strongest choice of restaurants, bakeries and everyday food stops. Seafood fits naturally with the fishing-harbour history, while cafés and casual restaurants make the area easy to use on airport days.
The region is compact enough that you do not need to carry a full day’s food, but opening hours can still vary outside the main towns and outside summer. If you are heading into a long lava or coastal loop, buy water and snacks first.
Reykjanes works particularly well for a simple travel rhythm: geothermal stop, coastal walk, harbour meal and a pool or lagoon before returning to Reykjavík or the airport.
Season by Season
After Dark
Reykjanes has several dark coastal and lava-field areas close to both Reykjavík and Keflavík, making it convenient for Northern Lights attempts. The open landscape helps with horizons, but the peninsula is very exposed to wind and Atlantic cloud, so conditions can change quickly.
Beyond
Reykjanes is one of the easiest full-day trips from Reykjavík and also works extremely well around airport timing. A complete loop can combine geothermal fields, lava, coast, lighthouse scenery and a town stop without the long driving distances of many other Icelandic regions.
Build the day around open geothermal areas, recent lava landscapes and a geothermal bath.
Focus on lighthouses, sea cliffs, Keflavík harbour history and indoor museums when the weather is mixed.

简单Volcanoes, lava and the Blue Lagoon
Hiking routes cross lava fields, follow coastal cliffs and wind up to mountain viewpoints with panoramas over the peninsula and Faxaflói bay. Distances are short and roads are paved — Reykjanes suits walkers, cyclists and families who want real Icelandic landscapes without long driving days.
Layers of the Peninsula
Reykjanes has been inhabited for over a thousand years — fishing villages, Viking-age farm sites and Cold War military history are woven into the same landscape. Keflavík grew around its fishing harbour and later became the site of the NATO air base that operated until 2006; the Duus Museum complex in the old harbour buildings tells the story of both eras.
Smaller historical sites dot the peninsula: medieval church ruins, wrecked fishing vessels used as memorials, and the remains of old farmsteads half-covered in lava. The Viking World museum at the harbour holds a full-size replica Viking ship.
Flexible Plans
Reykjanes weather is maritime — rain, wind and low cloud can arrive quickly from the Atlantic. If conditions close in on outdoor plans, the peninsula has a small but good set of indoor options: the museums in Keflavík's old harbour district, a geothermal pool in Grindavík, and the numerous restaurants and cafés spread across the peninsula's towns.
The Blue Lagoon operates in all weather — the fog and steam actually look better in overcast conditions. Most guided tours also run in rain: volcanic landscapes and geothermal fields are less crowded on grey days and the light can be dramatic. Keep a flexible day in your itinerary and have a short indoor route ready.
