During the Second World War, thousands of Allied personnel were stationed in and around Reyðarfjörður. Military camps, roads, storage areas and logistics infrastructure changed the community and connected the fjord directly to North Atlantic wartime operations. The museum preserves photographs, objects and personal stories from this period.

The Icelandic Wartime Museum in Reyðarfjörður presents the history of the Allied military occupation during the Second World War and the changes it brought to the local community. British forces arrived in 1940 and were later joined by American forces, turning the fjord into an important military and logistics location. Exhibitions use photographs, personal accounts, uniforms, vehicles and wartime equipment to show daily life during the occupation and the impact of a large foreign military presence on a small East Iceland town.
