Iceland's most iconic day trip
Golden Circle
Complete guide to Iceland's most famous sightseeing route.
No single drive captures the variety of southwest Iceland as easily as the Golden Circle. The classic loop from Reykjavík links Þingvellir National Park, the Geysir geothermal area and Gullfoss, while a fuller self-drive day can also include Laugarvatn, Brúarfoss, farm stops, geothermal bathing, Skálholt and Kerið. Allow roughly 300 km for the return drive from Reykjavík, plus time for short detours and stops.

Þingvellir
Uppgötvaðu Þingvelli, heillandi stað þar sem rík saga, menning og jarðfræði Íslands mætast. Stattu við rólegt vatnið, sem speglar tignarlega, snæviþakta tinda og dramatísk ský, og finndu djúpa tengingu við þessa fornu jörð. Það er staður þar sem þú getur sannarlega sokkið þér niður í náttúrufegurð og sögulega ómun Suðvesturlands Íslands.

Geysissvæðið
Geysissvæðið í Haukadal er heimili upprunalega Geysis (sem allir hverir um heim allan fá nafn sitt frá) og hins mjög virka Strokkur. Strokkur gýs tryggilega sjóðandi vatni 15-30 metra upp í loftið á 5-10 mínútna fresti, umkringdur gufu og litríkum steinefnaútfellingum.

Gullfoss
Frá þessu áhrifamikla sjónarhorni, sést Gullfoss í allri sinni tign með tveimur fossum sem steypast niður í hrikalegt gljúfur og skapa dramatíska úða sem rís upp í skýjaðan himin. Hvítá sker sig í gegnum víðfeðmt, haustlitað landslagið og leiðir gesti eftir krókóttum stígum til að verða vitni að þessu ótamda náttúruundur. Upplifðu hreinan kraft Gullfoss, þar sem jörðin virðist opnast til að faðma vatnsfallið.
Best Stops Along the Way

Laugarvatn Fontana
Laugarvatn Fontana er einstakt jarðhitabað á fallegum bökkum Laugarvatns á Suðurlandi. Gestir geta slakað á í náttúrulegum gufuböðum, notið steinefnaríkra lauga og dásamlegs útsýnis yfir vatnið, allt á hinni vinsælu Gullhringaleið.

Brúarfoss
Brúarfoss, oft kallaður „Bláasti foss Íslands,“ er sannarlega heillandi náttúruundur. Hann er staðsettur í fallegu landslagi Suðurlands, nálægt hinni frægu Gullnu hringleið.

Efstidalur II
Efstidalur II offers a unique farm-to-table dining experience in a charming rural setting, visible in its distinctive green building with white trim. Guests can enjoy fresh Icelandic cuisine, often featuring delicious dairy products from the farm, with the option of outdoor seating on sunny days, all set against a beautiful mountainous backdrop.

Skálholt
Historic bishopric and cultural centre that shaped Icelandic religious and educational life for centuries.

Kerið Crater Lake
Colourful volcanic crater lake on the Golden Circle, with paths around the rim and down toward the water.
Golden Circle Self-Drive
6-Hour Classic Golden Circle
6–7 hoursThe three essential Golden Circle stops with minimal detours — best when time or winter daylight is limited.
- 1.Þingvellir
- 2.Geysissvæðið
- 3.Gullfoss
Start early, keep meal stops short and return by the safest route for current conditions.
8–10 Hour Recommended Golden Circle
8–10 hoursThe classic three plus selected stops such as Brúarfoss, a farm stop and Kerið — the best balance for most self-drive visitors.
- 1.Þingvellir
- 2.Brúarfoss
- 3.Geysissvæðið
- 4.Gullfoss
- 5.Friðheimar
- 6.Kerið Crater Lake
Leave Reykjavík around 08:00–09:00. Choose only one longer food or bathing stop if you want a relaxed pace.
10–12 Hour Full Golden Circle
10–12 hoursA long full-day Golden Circle with the classic three plus selected scenic, food and cultural stops. Add one geothermal bath — Laugarvatn Fontana OR Secret Lagoon — if you want a spa stop; do not plan both on the same standard sightseeing day.
- 1.Þingvellir
- 2.Brúarfoss
- 3.Geysissvæðið
- 4.Gullfoss
- 5.Faxi (Vatnsleysufoss)
- 6.Friðheimar
- 7.Skálholt
- 8.Kerið Crater Lake
Best for long summer daylight. Choose one geothermal bath, not both, and usually choose either a substantial farm/lunch experience or several smaller scenic stops. In winter, prioritise the classic three and shorten the route.
Practical Information
- Parking
- Use designated parking at every stop. Þingvellir charges a daily parking/service fee that covers its main paid car parks; Kerið charges admission but parking is included. Geysir and Gullfoss have large visitor car parks.
- Road Conditions
- The classic Golden Circle is on paved roads and is normally suitable for a standard 2WD car in good conditions. The main driving roads are Routes 36, 365/37 and 35, with Routes 30/31/35/1 commonly used to complete the loop. Always check current conditions before setting out.
- Weather
- Weather can change quickly between Reykjavík, Þingvellir and the higher inland sections near Geysir and Gullfoss. Wind, rain, snow and ice can affect the route even when conditions in Reykjavík look calm.
- Fuel
- Fuel and EV charging are available in and around Selfoss, Laugarvatn, Flúðir and the wider Golden Circle area, but it is still sensible to start the day with enough range for the full loop.
- Food
- Good self-drive food stops include Efstidalur II, Friðheimar and the visitor centres at Geysir and Gullfoss. Friðheimar is popular, so reserve ahead if it is a priority.
- Toilets
- Visitor toilets are available at the major stops including Þingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss, with additional facilities at many cafés, baths and paid attractions along the route.
- Accessibility
- The main visitor areas at Þingvellir, Geysir and the upper Gullfoss viewpoint have relatively easy access from parking. Some paths, steps and lower viewpoints can be steep, uneven or icy.
- Winter Driving
- A 4WD is not normally required for the standard Golden Circle route, but winter road and weather conditions can make a 4WD preferable. Use a properly winter-equipped rental car, check road and weather conditions before departure, allow extra time and avoid driving in severe wind or poor visibility.
- Opening Information
- The outdoor natural sights are generally accessible year-round, but visitor centres, baths, restaurants and paid attractions have their own opening hours. Check same-day opening information before building the day around an optional stop.
- Safety
- Stay on marked paths around geothermal areas and waterfalls, obey barriers, and never stop on the road for photographs. In winter, expect ice on paths and car parks. Emergency number: 112.
Best Time to Visit
The Golden Circle is a genuine year-round route. June–August brings the midnight sun, wildflowers and easy driving, but also the biggest crowds — start before 9am or after 4pm to have the sites nearly to yourself. September–March trades daylight for the chance of Northern Lights over Þingvellir, snow-dusted Gullfoss and steaming geothermal fields. May and September are the sweet spot: long-ish days, thinner crowds and lower prices.
Did You Know?
- Þingvellir sits on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates are visibly pulling apart a couple of centimetres a year.
- The world got the word "geyser" from Geysir itself — its neighbour Strokkur still erupts every 5–10 minutes.
- Gullfoss ("Golden Falls") drops the glacial Hvítá river 32 metres in two dramatic steps.
- The Alþingi, the world's oldest continuous parliament, was founded at Þingvellir in 930 AD.
- Kerið is a roughly 3,000-year-old volcanic crater lake with a vivid red-black rim.

Driving the Golden Circle tonight?
Check the Northern Lights forecast before heading out — dark skies over Þingvellir and the fields around Geysir are excellent aurora-viewing spots.
