Overview
West Iceland stretches from Hvalfjörður and Akranes through Borgarfjörður to the Snæfellsnes Peninsula and the Dalir valleys. It is one of the easiest regions to combine with Reykjavík, yet it quickly feels rural: lava fields, broad fjords, waterfalls, old farms and small fishing towns replace the capital’s urban landscape.
Borgarfjörður is the inland heart of the region. Hraunfossar pours through a lava field into the Hvítá river, Barnafoss rushes through the same gorge system, and Deildartunguhver shows the geothermal power beneath the area. Nearby Borgarnes is one of the best places in Iceland to connect the landscape with the settlement era and the sagas.
Farther west, Snæfellsnes compresses much of Iceland’s scenery into a single peninsula: volcanic craters, black and golden beaches, sea cliffs, lava fields, fishing villages and the Snæfellsjökull massif. To the north, Dalir is quieter and strongly tied to Viking-age settlement history. West Iceland works best as a road-trip region rather than a checklist — give it enough time to stop at small harbours, viewpoints and historical places between the headline sights.
Why Visit
Snæfellsnes combines volcanic landscapes, beaches, sea cliffs, mountains and fishing villages within a relatively compact area.
Borgarfjörður brings together Hraunfossar, Barnafoss, hot springs and lava landscapes in one easy touring area.
Borgarnes and Dalir connect directly with Iceland’s settlement history, saga families and Viking-age heritage.
Short hikes, crater walks, coastal paths and viewpoints let you add outdoor time without committing to long expeditions.
Scenic loops such as Snæfellsnes, the Silver Circle and Hvalfjörður make West Iceland easy to build into a multi-day self-drive.

ViewGeothermal
Like the rest of Iceland, West Iceland has a strong public-pool culture. Town pools are often the easiest, best-value place to warm up after a wet hike or winter drive, while Borgarfjörður also has geothermal bathing experiences that make direct use of the region’s hot-water resources.
Eat & Experience
West Iceland’s food culture follows the landscape: seafood in the fishing towns of Snæfellsnes, lamb and dairy from the farming districts, and simple cafés and bakeries in the larger settlements. Borgarnes is the easiest all-round food stop for road-trippers, while Stykkishólmur and other harbour towns are especially strong for fish and shellfish.
Small-town opening hours can be shorter than in Reykjavík, particularly outside summer, so it pays to check dinner options before arriving late. Supermarkets are useful for picnic supplies when you are spending the day on scenic loops with long gaps between towns.
The region also works well for slow travel: a bakery stop in Borgarnes, seafood by a harbour, a public pool in the evening and a local meal after a day outside often feels more memorable than trying to fit every attraction into one route.
Season by Season
After Dark
West Iceland is well suited to Northern Lights hunting because towns are small and dark countryside is never far away. The season is roughly from autumn to spring, when nights are dark enough. Snæfellsnes, Hvalfjörður and rural Borgarfjörður all offer open horizons and low light pollution, but cloud cover and road conditions matter just as much as aurora activity.
Logistics
West Iceland is spread out and most scenic stops sit outside towns. A car gives the flexibility to combine waterfalls, villages, hikes and historical sites in one day.
Snæfellsnes, the Silver Circle and Hvalfjörður work naturally as scenic loops. Avoid packing two major loops into the same short winter day.
Snow, ice and wind can slow travel or close exposed roads. Check conditions before leaving and allow more time than summer driving estimates suggest.
Road conditionsBuses connect some towns, but they are not designed around sightseeing stops. Public transport is workable for point-to-point travel, not for most attraction-heavy itineraries.
Fill up before long rural loops and check charging options in advance if you are driving an EV, especially outside the larger towns.
Beyond
West Iceland can be visited from Reykjavík, but the region becomes much better when you stay overnight. Borgarfjörður is realistic as a long day trip from the capital; Snæfellsnes is also possible in a day but feels rushed if you try to stop often. Staying in Borgarnes or on the peninsula turns the same routes into a far more relaxed trip.
Know Before You Go
Strong wind is one of the biggest practical issues in West Iceland, especially on exposed coasts and mountain roads.
Frequent scenic stops make loops take longer than the map suggests. Leave margin rather than chasing a fixed arrival time.
Waterfall paths, lava and coastal trails can be wet, uneven or icy. Shoes with real grip make a noticeable difference.
Conditions can differ sharply between a sheltered valley and an exposed headland. Keep waterproof and warm layers accessible.
Fuel and charging are available in the region, but not at every attraction or on every remote stretch.
Low sun, fast-moving cloud and sea mist can completely change Snæfellsnes within minutes — avoid over-scheduling photography stops.

Because the peninsula packs a glacier, volcano, lava fields, black beaches, waterfalls, fishing villages and birdlife into one compact, drivable loop.
Borgarnes is about 1 hour; the Snæfellsnes peninsula highlights are 2–2.5 hours from the capital, making it an easy day trip or overnight.
The 'Church Mountain' near Grundarfjörður — Iceland's most photographed peak, especially with the Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall in the foreground (and a Game of Thrones filming location).
Yes — Víðgelmir (one of the world's largest lava tubes) and Vatnshellir under Snæfellsjökull both run guided tours year-round.
A 700,000-year-old glacier-capped volcano at the peninsula's tip — the setting of Jules Verne's Journey to the Center of the Earth and the heart of a national park.
Borgarfjörður (Hraunfossar, Deildartunguhver, Krauma) works as a half-day; the full Snæfellsnes loop deserves a long day or overnight in Stykkishólmur.
The Krauma geothermal baths near Reykholt, fed by the mighty Deildartunguhver hot spring, plus the natural Landbrotalaug pool.
Yes — the Baldur ferry runs from Stykkishólmur across Breiðafjörður to the Westfjords, cutting hours off the drive north.
Summer (May–August) around the Snæfellsnes cliffs and on boat trips from the Breiðafjörður islands.
