Silver Circle — Borgarfjörður

Waterfalls, hot springs, sagas and lava caves

146 km
1 day
Auðvelt
Year-round · Best May–September

A compact West Iceland loop through waterfalls, geothermal power, saga history and optional lava caves.

The Silver Circle works best as a flexible Borgarfjörður day rather than a checklist of every possible attraction. Deildartunguhver, Reykholt, Hraunfossar and Barnafoss form the core; Húsafell and a pre-booked cave experience can extend the day. Keep cave visits and longer walks optional so the route still feels like a road trip rather than a race.

Winter Warning

The main loop can work in winter, but ice, snow and short daylight make optional cave and remote detours less flexible. Check road and weather conditions before departure.

Before You Go

Practical Information

Trip Duration

Full day (8–10 hours)

Starting Point

Borgarnes or Reykjavík

Best Time to Visit

The core road trip works year-round when road conditions are good. May–September offers the easiest walking and longest daylight; in winter, shorten optional detours and allow extra time for icy parking areas and paths.

Road Conditions

The core Borgarfjörður route uses normal roads and does not normally require a 4x4 in good conditions. Remote cave and highland-edge detours can involve rougher access.

Weather

West Iceland weather can change quickly, especially with wind, snow and ice in winter.

Fuel

Borgarnes is the best major place to fuel or charge before the loop. Do not start remote detours with low range.

Food

Borgarnes, Reykholt and Húsafell are the most practical areas for meals and supplies. Check seasonal opening times.

Parking

Use designated parking at attractions. Hraunfossar and Barnafoss are naturally combined from the same visitor area.

Toilets

Facilities are available at major commercial and visitor stops, but not every natural attraction has year-round services.

Safety

Stay behind geothermal barriers, use marked waterfall paths and never enter lava caves independently unless the site explicitly permits it.

Accessibility

Several headline stops are short walks from parking, while cave visits and some waterfall paths involve uneven ground.

Winter Driving

A 4x4 is not automatically required for the core route, but winter tyres, road checks and conservative driving are essential.

Opening Hours

Natural sites are generally accessible when roads are open; museums, caves, cafés and activity providers have their own schedules and may require booking.

Innherjaþekking

Ferðaráð

1

Fuel in Borgarnes before the loop.

2

Keep paid cave experiences pre-booked rather than assuming walk-in availability.

3

Winter ice can make short paths and parking areas more difficult than the main road.

4

Combine Hraunfossar and Barnafoss as one stop rather than scheduling them separately.

5

Choose one major cave experience if you want a relaxed day.

6

Check museum, cave and food opening times outside the main summer season.

Algengar spurningar

Algengar spurningar

Do I need a 4x4 for the Silver Circle?+

No for the standard main-road itinerary in normal conditions. Always check current road and weather conditions, especially in winter.

Can I drive the Silver Circle in one day from Reykjavík?+

Yes. A full day gives enough time for the main stops; cave tours or longer walks may make an overnight in Borgarfjörður more comfortable.

How long is the Silver Circle?+

The recognised scenic route is about 146 km, before adding the drive from Reykjavík or longer side detours.

Should I visit both Hraunfossar and Barnafoss?+

Yes. They are beside each other and function as one combined road-trip stop rather than two separate time blocks.

Do I need to book Víðgelmir?+

Treat it as a booked activity and confirm the current schedule before building the day around it.

Can I drive the Silver Circle in winter?+

The core route can work when roads are open, but daylight, ice and weather mean you should shorten optional detours and check conditions before departure.
