Waterfalls, black beaches and glaciers
South Coast
Complete self-drive guide from Reykjavík to waterfalls, black beaches, glaciers and Jökulsárlón.
Iceland’s South Coast is one of the country’s easiest major road trips to plan because the headline sights sit close to Route 1. The best experience, however, is not to rush from Reykjavík to Jökulsárlón and back in a single day. Give the route two or three days and you can combine the famous waterfalls and Reynisfjara with quieter stops, glacier viewpoints, Vík, Fjaðrárgljúfur, Skaftafell and the glacier lagoons without spending the entire trip behind the wheel.

Skaftafell
Skaftafell presents a stunning tapestry of natural wonders, visible even from the aerial view showing its verdant slopes meeting the vast glacial outwash plains. From the vibrant green hillsides, dotted with walking trails, to the majestic tongues of the Vatnajökull glacier, the largest in Europe, it's a place of stark contrasts. Visitors are drawn to its diverse hiking opportunities, ranging from easy strolls to challenging climbs, all set against a backdrop of ancient ice and volcanic rock. The area's character is defined by its dramatic geological history and its role as a hub for exploring the surrounding national park, with a well-equipped visitor center and campsites visible in the landscape.

Breiðamerkursandur (Díamantsandur)
Við hlið Jökulsárlóns er Díamantsandur þar sem fornar ísstykki skola á land og glitra fallega á móti kolsvörtum eldfjallasandinum. Þessar kristaltæru skúlptúrar, sumar aldagamlar, skapa heillandi og síbreytilegt landslag, fullkomið fyrir ljósmyndara og náttúruunnendur.

Jökulsárlón
The image perfectly captures the serene yet dramatic essence of Jökulsárlón, showcasing massive, sculpted icebergs floating gracefully in the deep blue-green waters, framed by a rugged, gravelly shoreline. This dynamic lagoon, constantly fed by the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier, is a breathtaking natural amphitheater where ancient ice, some exhibiting a striking blue hue, slowly melts under the Icelandic sky. Its character is one of tranquil majesty, inviting visitors to witness a unique dance between ice and water, making it an unparalleled destination for photographers, nature lovers, and anyone seeking a truly otherworldly experience. The sheer scale and beauty of the icebergs, as depicted, are truly captivating, with their varying sizes and distinct forms. The dark, reflective water contrasts beautifully with the pale and blue ice.

Practical Information
- Parking
- Expect designated parking at the major attractions. Some South Coast sites use paid parking or service fees, so follow current signage and payment instructions at each stop.
- Road Conditions
- The main South Coast route follows Route 1 and short access roads to attractions. Route 1 is paved and normally suitable for a 2WD vehicle in good conditions. Check current road conditions before departure, especially in winter or during high winds.
- Weather
- Weather can change quickly along the coast. Strong winds, heavy rain, poor visibility and winter ice can all affect driving and walking conditions.
- Fuel
- Major fuel stops include Selfoss/Hella/Hvolsvöllur, Vík, Kirkjubæjarklaustur and the Höfn area. Do not rely on every rural service point being open late; refuel before long sections when your tank is low.
- Food
- Reliable food stops are available in towns such as Hvolsvöllur, Skógar/Vík, Kirkjubæjarklaustur and around Skaftafell/Jökulsárlón, but opening hours can be limited outside peak season.
- Toilets
- Toilets are available at many major visitor sites and service stops, but not at every viewpoint. Use facilities when available rather than assuming the next stop has them.
- Accessibility
- Accessibility varies by stop. Major viewing areas at several headline attractions are relatively easy to reach, while waterfall stairs, canyon paths, glacier approaches and beach terrain can be uneven, wet or icy.
- Winter Driving
- A 4x4 is not automatically required for Route 1, but winter-ready tyres, a suitable vehicle, conservative driving and frequent condition checks are essential. Delay or change plans when official warnings or road closures indicate unsafe conditions.
- Opening Information
- Natural attractions are generally accessible year-round when roads and local conditions allow, but paths, viewpoints or access roads can close temporarily for weather, safety, conservation or maintenance.
- Safety
- At Reynisfjara follow the on-site warning system and stay well away from the sea; sneaker waves have caused fatalities. At glacier areas stay on marked visitor routes and never step onto glacier ice without a qualified guided activity. At Jökulsárlón and Diamond Beach never climb onto floating or shoreline ice near the water.
Best Time to Visit
The South Coast is a year-round route. May–September gives long daylight, easier walking conditions and the most flexibility for adding hikes and glacier-lagoon activities. Winter can be spectacular, but daylight is short and wind, snow or ice can change driving conditions quickly. Check current road and weather information before each driving day.
