What to Do in Iceland

Iceland offers experiences that exist almost nowhere else — walking on active glaciers, bathing in natural hot springs, watching whales from open boats and chasing the Northern Lights across a sky with no light pollution. Below is an overview of the major categories of things to do across the country, organized so you can find what fits your trip.

Waterfalls & Natural Attractions

Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss anchor the South Coast — Seljalandsfoss has a path that goes behind the falls. Dettifoss in North Iceland is the most powerful waterfall in Europe. Dozens of lesser-known waterfalls are scattered across every region.

Glaciers & Ice Experiences

Glacier walks are available year-round on Sólheimajökull on the South Coast and on outlets of Vatnajökull in the southeast. Ice cave tours inside Vatnajökull run from November to March. Langjökull in West Iceland has a man-made ice tunnel you enter by snowcat.

Geothermal Pools & Hot Springs

Every Icelandic town has a geothermal public swimming pool. Natural hot springs range from the Blue Lagoon in Reykjanes to remote soaking spots like Fosslaug in West Iceland and the Mývatn Nature Baths in the north. Geothermal bathing is year-round and suits all budgets.

Northern Lights

The Northern Lights are visible from August through April when skies are dark and clear. Guided aurora tours depart from Reykjavík most evenings in season. North Iceland — around Akureyri and the Diamond Circle — offers some of the most reliable viewing conditions.

Whale Watching & Wildlife

Húsavík in North Iceland is Iceland's whale watching capital, with some of the highest sighting rates in Europe. Reykjavík harbour also runs year-round tours. Puffins nest on the Westman Islands and in the Westfjords from May to August. Reindeer roam the Eastfjords.

Golden Circle & South Coast

The Golden Circle — Þingvellir National Park, the Geysir geothermal area and Gullfoss waterfall — is Iceland's most popular day trip from Reykjavík. The South Coast extends east through Reynisfjara black-sand beach, Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon and Vatnajökull National Park.
