About Hallgrímskirkja
Hallgrímskirkja is Reykjavík’s largest church and one of the tallest structures in Iceland at 74.5 metres high. Designed by architect Guðjón Samúelsson, the church’s unique exterior reflects Iceland’s volcanic basalt column formations and rugged natural landscapes. Construction began in 1945 and took more than 40 years to complete. Today Hallgrímskirkja serves both as a parish church and a major cultural landmark visited by travelers from around the world. The observation tower offers one of the best panoramic viewpoints in Reykjavík and provides excellent orientation across the capital region. The church is located at the top of Skólavörðustígur street, one of Reykjavík’s main walking routes connecting the city centre with the harbour area.
