Vík, or Vík í Mýrdal, is Iceland's southernmost town — a small, windswept community of around 700 people wedged between the North Atlantic on one side and Mýrdalsjökull glacier on the other. Vík sits directly in the path of potential flood water from a Katla eruption — the town has an emergency evacuation plan and the church on the hill above is the designated refuge.
