„Kirkja sú er nú stendur á Þingeyrum er með merkustu kirkjuhúsum landsins, byggð af Ásgeiri Einarssyni (1809-1885) alþingismanni er sat staðinn með reisn á árunum 1861-1863 og aftur frá 1867 til æviloka. Ásgeir reisti kirkjuna á árunum 1864-1877 og lagði til byggingarinnar 10.000 af 16.000 sem hún kostaði og sparaði ekkert til að gera hana sem veglegasta. Kirkjan er hlaðin úr grjóti og steinarnir límdir með kalki í hleðslunni. (...) Naumast finnst steinvala í landi Þingeyra og var hleðslugrjótið allt sótt vestur í Nesbjörg handan Hópsins og dregið á sleðum með uxa fyrir, yfir ísa að vetrinum.“
