Þaralátursfjörður formed part of the dispersed settlement landscape of Hornstrandir, where families lived in remote fjords that depended heavily on the sea and seasonal access. As permanent habitation across Hornstrandir declined during the 20th century, the fjord became part of the largely uninhabited wilderness landscape seen today.

Þaralátursfjörður is one of the isolated fjords of Hornstrandir, a roadless part of the northern Westfjords where former settlement and present-day wilderness exist side by side. Traces of human habitation remain in the landscape, but permanent community life has long since disappeared. That contrast is the main reason to visit. The fjord offers a direct sense of how remote Westfjords settlements once depended on boats, local resources and difficult overland routes. Today, reaching the area still requires careful logistics. Visitors generally arrive by boat or as part of a longer Hornstrandir trek, carrying navigation, food, shelter and enough flexibility for weather delays. There are no normal roadside services, and old settlement remains should be treated as cultural heritage rather than campsites or climbing structures. Stay on established or well-documented routes, respect any private buildings and leave archaeological remains undisturbed. Þaralátursfjörður is most rewarding for experienced travellers who value quiet wilderness and the physical traces of a vanished coastal way of life.
