Snæfellsjökull National Park encompasses the western tip of the Snæfellsnes peninsula — a compact but extraordinarily varied landscape dominated by the Snæfellsjökull glacier volcano. Jules Verne chose Snæfellsjökull as the entrance to the centre of the Earth in his 1864 novel, and the mountain has had a mystical reputation among Icelanders for centuries. The park includes lava fields of extraordinary formations (Djúpalónssandur, Dritvík), sea cliffs with seabird colonies, the Vatnshellir lava tube cave, basalt archipelago at Lóndrangar, and the glacier summit at 1,446 metres. The park is compact and most major sites are accessible from the Ring Road.
