Seljavellir lies in a geothermal valley between the surrounding mountain ridges of Eyjafjöll. Laugará flows through the valley and is fed by hot springs that emerge directly from the rock near the older Seljavallalaug. These springs also supply warm water to the swimming-pool area. Farther into the valley, the mountain edge forms the imposing Svarthamrar cliffs, where intrusive rock meets hyaloclastite and sections of columnar rock can be seen.
