历史与背景
The Reykjanes vaknar photography project began in January 2020 and expanded through the eruption sequence that started on the peninsula in 2021. The first exhibition from the archive opened in Reykjavík during Culture Night in 2024, focusing on Grindavík and its residents. A larger exhibition was later shown outside Harpa during the Björgun 2024 conference and then moved to Grindavík. The Icelandic photo book Reykjanes vaknar was published in 2024; an updated, smaller English edition titled Reykjanes Awakens followed in spring 2026.
Reykjanes Awakens is not a conventional art gallery. It is a documentary photography exhibition connected to the Reykjanes vaknar project by Icelandic photographer Sigurður Ólafur Sigurðsson, also known as Siggi Sig. The project began after a public meeting in Grindavík in January 2020, when unusual earthquake activity on the Reykjanes Peninsula was becoming an increasingly important part of daily life. Since then Sigurður has photographed the unfolding volcanic crisis from the perspective of both a professional photographer and a person with long experience in search, rescue and emergency work. The archive documents eruptions, evacuations, emergency responders, residents, animals, protective barriers, infrastructure failures, destruction, rebuilding and the emotional reality of living through repeated geological events. The first exhibitions from the project appeared in 2024, including displays in Reykjavík and Grindavík. A large outdoor exhibition was moved to Grindavík after being shown near Harpa, and Visit Reykjanes continues to list Reykjanes Awakens as a photography exhibition in the town. The original Icelandic photo book Reykjanes vaknar was published in 2024, followed by the English-language Reykjanes Awakens edition in 2026. Because Grindavík remains a town affected by ongoing volcanic hazards, visitors should follow current official access and safety information before travelling. The exhibition is best approached as a living historical record: the project is still developing as new events occur.
民间故事
故事与民间故事
The story behind Reykjanes Awakens began before lava reached the surface. In January 2020, photographer Sigurður Ólafur Sigurðsson attended a public meeting in Grindavík as residents tried to understand an unusual earthquake swarm. He began documenting what was happening, and the assignment grew into a multi-year record of one of the most dramatic periods in modern Icelandic natural history. His photographs followed the story from scientific uncertainty to eruptions, emergency responses, evacuations and the construction of defensive barriers around Grindavík and vital infrastructure. They also followed people: residents leaving homes, responders working in dangerous conditions and communities trying to adapt. The resulting archive became books and exhibitions, including the display now associated with Grindavík. Unlike a retrospective created after events ended, Reykjanes Awakens is a record of a story that is still unfolding.
