Naustahvilft's main significance is geological and cultural rather than historical. The bowl-shaped valley was formed by glacial processes, while generations of local storytelling have associated its unusual shape with the legend of a troll resting above Ísafjörður.

Naustahvilft is a distinctive bowl-shaped hanging valley high above Ísafjörður, commonly known as the Troll Seat. The short route climbs steeply from near Ísafjörður Airport and quickly gains elevation, giving increasingly broad views across Skutulsfjörður, the town and the flat-topped mountains that frame the fjord. The hollow itself is a striking glacial landform, but local folklore gives it an additional identity: a troll is said to have sat down on the mountain to rest, leaving the enormous seat-shaped depression behind. That story is part of the attraction, but the real landscape is dramatic enough on its own. Although the walk is relatively short, it should not be underestimated. The climb is steep, the surface can be wet or slippery and the upper area is exposed to wind. Wear footwear with good grip, take your time on the descent and turn back if visibility or weather deteriorates. On a clear day, Naustahvilft is one of the most rewarding short walks around Ísafjörður.
