Miðfjörður

Miðfjörður lies at the western entrance to North Iceland and forms a natural starting point for exploring Laugarbakki, Hvammstangi and the Vatnsnes peninsula. The landscape combines low coastal country, rivers, farms and access to several of northwest Iceland's best-known visitor sites. Hvammstangi is the main service town for the area and home to the Icelandic Seal Center. From there, travellers can continue around Vatnsnes to seal-watching locations such as Illugastaðir, the dramatic Hvítserkur sea stack and the volcanic formation Borgarvirki. The region is also closely tied to the story of Agnes Magnúsdóttir and Natan Ketilsson, with Illugastaðir and Þrístapar among the key historical locations. Miðfjörður itself is best understood as part of a driving landscape rather than one single attraction. Laugarbakki sits close to Route 1, making the area easy to include on a Ring Road itinerary, while the Vatnsnes detour rewards visitors who have several additional hours to explore the coast.
