It is referenced in Bishop Páll's church registry from 1200, indicating its long-standing importance as a place of worship, even serving as St. Peter's Church during Iceland's Catholic era. The current magnificent structure, distinguished by its white wooden facade and striking red roof, was constructed between 1892 and 1893. The consecration of the church took place on June 11, 1893, officiated by Bishop Hallgrímur Sveinsson, marking a significant event for the local community.
