Hrútey has a long and intriguing history, primarily centered around its utility rather than habitation. Despite its fertile grounds and strategic location within the Blanda River, the island was never permanently settled by people. Instead, for centuries, it served as vital grazing land, providing sustenance for livestock from the surrounding farms. This continuous use for grazing highlights its importance to the local community throughout history. In ancient times, Hrútey was associated with the farm known as Klif or Kleif, a place that even finds mention in the historical Icelandic saga, Heiðarvígasaga. This connection underscores the island's deep roots within the cultural and historical fabric of the region, linking it with narratives of early Icelandic life and settlement patterns. Recognizing its unique ecological value and historical significance, Hrútey underwent a pivotal change in 1975 when it was officially designated as a nature park (fólkvangur). This protection status ensures that the island's diverse flora, rich birdlife, and tranquil environment are preserved, transforming it from a mere grazing ground into a cherished natural sanctuary for both wildlife and visitors.
