Grásteinn, also known as Silfursteinn, is a large granite boulder located near Stóra-Ávík in the Westfjords. The rock is notable because granite of this type is not native to the immediate surroundings, making its presence here a geological curiosity. Local geological interpretation holds that the boulder was transported from Greenland by sea ice at a time when sea level stood higher than it does today. For a rock weighing several tonnes to have been carried this way, the ice supporting it must have been substantial. The boulder therefore provides an unusual, tangible connection between the coast of Iceland and past Arctic sea-ice conditions. Its silvery surface catches the light, explaining the alternative name Silfursteinn, or 'Silver Stone'. The site is not a major developed attraction, but it is worthwhile for travellers interested in geology and unusual natural features along the Strandir route. The stone is protected for its natural heritage value, so visitors should view it without disturbing the site or surrounding ground.
民间故事
故事与民间故事
Grásteinn is easy to overlook until its origin is considered. The enormous granite boulder is out of place among the surrounding rocks and is believed to have reached the Strandir coast carried by sea ice from Greenland. Its pale, reflective surface gave rise to the name Silfursteinn. The stone is a compact reminder that the Westfjords landscape has been shaped not only by volcanoes and glaciers, but also by changing sea levels and drifting Arctic ice.
