History & Background
Gluggafoss, also known as Merkjárfoss, takes its name from the openings or “windows” that the river has cut through softer tuff in the upper cliff. Harder basalt layers below resist erosion differently, producing the waterfall's distinctive stepped form. The site is protected as a natural monument.
Gluggafoss is the best-known of several waterfalls in the Merkjá river. The upper cliff is largely tuff while harder basalt forms lower sections, creating the distinctive channels and 'windows' in the rock. The waterfall is protected as a natural monument, and visitors should use established paths and viewing areas.
