History & Background
Bóla is historically significant as an abandoned farm (eyðibýli) located in Blönduhlíð in Skagafjörður, Northern Iceland. It served as the former residence of Hjálmar Jónsson (1796–1875), a 19th-century farmer-poet whose life and poetic works were profoundly influenced by his years spent here. His connection to this place was so strong that his fate is said to have been sealed within its boundaries. In honor of his enduring legacy and contributions to Icelandic literature, a distinctive monument was erected at Bóla in 1955. This initiative was spearheaded by the Skagfirðingafélagið á Akureyri (the Skagafjörður Association in Akureyri). The monument itself, a tall stone pillar crowned with a symbolic harp, stands as a permanent tribute to Hjálmar Jónsson's poetic spirit. As visible in the provided image, it is covered in vibrant orange lichen, a natural testament to the passage of time and the unique elemental forces of the Icelandic landscape, further enhancing its cultural and historical significance.

Story & Folklore
