Bæjarkirkja er í Hvanneyrarprestakalli í Borgarfjarðarprófastsdæmi og var hún vígð 1967 (1). Bær er stórbýli að fornu og nýju. „Í öndverðri kristni sat þar enskur biskup, Hróðólfur að nafni (d. 1052), og setti þar klaustur og skóla, hin fyrstu á Íslandi, og innleiddi bókstafi í stað rúna. Þar var háður bardagi 1237 þegar Sturla Sighvatsson barðist við Þorleif Þórðarson. Í túninu á Bæ vex villilaukur, ef til vill leifar klausturgarðsins“ (2).
