📖 Story
Stuðlagil Canyon was Iceland's secret — literally hidden underwater until recently. When the Kárahnjúkar Dam was built upstream, river flow decreased and exposed the canyon's magnificent basalt columns. Word spread on Instagram and it exploded in popularity. Today it's one of Iceland's most photogenic sites: towering geometric columns on both sides of a brilliant turquoise river. The east bank offers the classic view looking down into the canyon. The west side requires a longer hike but gets you to the canyon floor.
