Berserkjahraun, a name that means 'Berserkers' Lava Field,' is deeply rooted in both geological time and Icelandic sagas. This impressive lava field, located in the western part of Helgafellssveit, is believed to have erupted approximately 4000 years ago. Its formation originated from four primary scoria and tephra cones: Rauðakúla, Gráakúla, Smáhraunakúla, and Kothraunskúla, each bearing evidence of their fiery past with distinct craters. The human history of Berserkjahraun is equally fascinating. Early settlers recognized the need to navigate this rugged terrain, clearing paths and horse trails directly through the heart of the lava field. These historical routes speak to the perseverance of those who lived and traveled here centuries ago. Along the fringes of the lava, ancient resting spots known as Nátthagar served as waypoints for weary travelers. The most famous story associated with the lava field comes from the Eyrbyggja Saga, recounting how two berserkers were tasked by a local farmer, Styr, to clear a path through the impassable lava. Their legendary strength and eventual demise in the process gave the area its evocative name, forever linking this dramatic landscape to tales of old Icelandic heroism and tragedy.
