Smjörvatnsheiði

Smjörvatnsheiði is a location that appears in Þorsteins saga Síðu-Hallssonar, Vopnfirðinga saga, one of the Íslendingasögur — the Sagas of Icelanders. These remarkable medieval texts were written in Iceland during the 13th and 14th centuries, preserving oral histories and stories from the Viking Age settlement of Iceland (9th–11th centuries).

The sagas describe real people, places, and events, making locations like Smjörvatnsheiði living connections to Iceland's deep past. Many of these saga sites can still be visited today, standing as silent witnesses to the dramatic events recorded in the ancient texts.

"Þorsteins saga Síðu-Hallssonar (5) Broddi leysti Þorstein í brott með góðum gjöfum og er þeir fóru norðan um Smjörvatnsheiði þá hrapaði maður þeirra fyrir brekku nokkura og hló Þorsteinn að og margir menn er manninn sakaði ekki.Vopnfirðinga saga (2) Eftir það lagðist Svartur út á heiði þá er vér köllum Smjörvatnsheiði skammt frá Sunnudal og leggst á fé Hofsverja og gerði miklu meira að en honum var nauðsyn til. (2) Hann kemur á Smjörvatnsheiði upp frá Sunnudal."
