Skálafell's history is written in its very rock. Formed by intense volcanic activity, the mountain is a prime example of Iceland's geological birthright. The distinctive hexagonal basalt columns, prominently featured, are a testament to the rapid cooling of lava flows, a process that created these naturally geometric wonders over millennia. This region, like much of Iceland, was then further sculpted by the immense power of glaciers during the last ice age, leaving behind the rugged contours and valleys we see today. Culturally, Iceland's mountains, including peaks like Skálafell, are deeply interwoven with the nation's rich tapestry of sagas and folklore. Many peaks carry names from these ancient stories, connecting the landscape to over a thousand years of Icelandic storytelling and human endeavor. While Skálafell itself might not be directly named in a famous saga, its presence in the Reykjanes region, a place of early settlement and dramatic natural phenomena, certainly evokes the spirit of these foundational tales. Skálafell on outer Reykjanes was built by several eruptions along a narrow fissure system. The surface contains earthquake fissures and lava layers more than 8,000 years old. Near the top is a spatter crater, with collapse features extending southward and small caves in parts of the formation. The usual walking approach begins near the Gunnuhver parking area. This is rough volcanic terrain, so visitors should use established routes and avoid entering caves without appropriate knowledge and equipment.
