Krossvíkurviti
About Krossvíkurviti
Perched on a gentle, flower-strewn hill overlooking the vast ocean, Krossvíkurviti is a charming and historic lighthouse in West Iceland. Its unique, weathered architecture, complete with arched upper windows, stands sentinel against a dramatic backdrop of distant snow-capped mountains and a sweeping sky.
History & Background
The history of Krossvíkurviti is intertwined with the maritime needs of Akranes Harbor. The initial design for an entrance lighthouse for Akranes Harbor was conceived in 1934 by engineer Benedikt Jónasson. However, when the lighthouse was finally constructed in 1937, engineer Axel Sveinsson made slight modifications to Jónasson's original plans, resulting in the unique structure we see today. For decades, Krossvíkurviti served as a crucial harbor lighthouse, guiding vessels safely into Akranes. Its steady beam was a comforting sight for sailors, marking the treacherous entrance to the port and ensuring safe passage through the often-challenging Icelandic waters. In 1986, the role of Krossvíkurviti evolved. It was decommissioned as a primary harbor lighthouse and subsequently transformed into a 'front leading light.' In its current capacity, the light positioned atop the lighthouse continues to serve as a vital marker, precisely indicating the entrance to the harbor. This adaptation reflects the changing needs of modern navigation while preserving the historical significance and physical presence of this enduring beacon.
