Background
History & Background
Háleyjabunga is a geologically significant lava shield volcano, formed during a highly effusive lava eruption at least 9,000 years ago. It stands as one of the oldest volcanic formations on the Reykjanes Peninsula, showcasing picrite lavas that emerged shortly after the last glacial period. Its age and unique composition make it a crucial site for understanding the early post-glacial volcanic activity in this region of Iceland. Recognized for its importance, Háleyjabunga is designated as a geosite within the Reykjanes UNESCO Global Geopark. This status underscores its value in illustrating the powerful geological forces that have shaped Iceland over millennia. The volcano's structure, particularly where it meets the sea, offers a rare opportunity to observe the internal layers of a lava shield and how subsequent, younger lava flows have interacted with this ancient landscape. The impressive circular crater, 20-25 meters deep, is a lasting testament to the intensity of its formation. The surrounding landscape, a testament to its volcanic origins, remains largely untouched, preserving the raw, rugged beauty of Iceland's volcanic heritage.
Háleyjabunga is a low lava shield near Reykjanesviti on the southwestern tip of the peninsula. It formed during an effusive eruption and has a broad summit crater approximately 20–25 metres deep. The shield is around 9,000 years old or older and is notable for picrite basalt with visible green olivine crystals. A marked walking route connects the area with Gunnuhver. Háleyjabunga is a geosite within Reykjanes UNESCO Global Geopark.
