Gunnuhver Mud Pools & Fumaroles
About Gunnuhver Mud Pools & Fumaroles
Gunnuhver is one of Iceland's largest geothermal areas with boiling mud pools, aggressive steam vents and scalding hot springs near the town of Grindavík. The main feature is a powerful fumarole that blasts steam 20–30 metres into the air with a roaring sound. The area is named after a ghost (Gunna) who was lured into the hot spring and trapped there. Wooden boardwalks provide safe viewing access to the dramatic thermal activity. The smell of sulphur is strong throughout the area.
